For those who don’t know her, Herta Müller is a German writer
born in Romania. In 2009, she received the Nobel Prize in Literature for her
novel Atemschaukel, in English Everything I Own I Carry With Me.
It is a book about the deportation of German people who happened to live in
Romania to the Stalinist Soviet Gulags to serve as slaves. In her works, Müller
talks about some personal issues. Her themes are in general related to the
terror and violence present in Nicolae Ceausescu’s comunista government, which
Müller experienced during part of her life. Her writing bleeds, it is painful,
profound, full of intelligent and rich metaphors. And her eyes already told you
something about her work.
