Katy Perry really does not stop. Since May,
2010, when “California Gurls” was released, she has been producing singles with
no breaks. “Wide Awake” is the second single from the re-released of Teenage
Dream, that occurred last March. Just like “Part of Me” and just like some
other furious ladies – Alanis Morissette, Fiona Apple, for example – Perry sings
about staying alive after a huge love disappointment (she recently got
divorced). They are aggressive verses as “I wish I knew then what I know
now/Wouldn’t dive in/Wouldn’t bow down”, that get more intense along a strong
beat, also aggressive, similar to that of “E.T.” and have their climax in a
powerful chorus. The song was produced by Max Martin, Dr. Luke and Bonnie McKee,
Perry’s long time colleagues. One more ballad among several others that Perry
has released, “Wide Awake” is, though, stronger and deeper. The song will serve
to promote the 3D documentary Katy Perry:
Part of Me, set for release in July. Katy sang the song yesterday on Billboard Music Awards, medium performance,
really below what “Wide Awake” deserved.
