First, it was Amy Winehouse,
in July, 2011. Then Whitney Houston, last February. And yesterday, May 17,
2012, Donna Summer, queen of the disco music, left us. In last than one year, this
is the third significant woman in music that passes away. The pity of it. Great singers are leaving
us. Just when the world of music needs them the most.
Donna Summer died last Thursday night. At the age of
63, she was struggling with cancer. Donna leaves us with a strong legacy. There
were 130 million records sold, 5 Grammy awards, several US number 1 hits, and
the label of queen of the disco era. Just like Quincy Jones ‘tweeted’, Donna
Summer was ‘ the heart beat and the soundtrack of a decade”. Still, she had
powerful influence on women like Madonna, Kylie Minogue and Beyoncé. Donna’s
gone brings forward a important reflection: pop has been losing its icons, that
helped to establish it (Michael Jackson, Donna summer) or to create new tendencies
(Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse), at the same time that new artists at the same
level are not coming up. The music market is targeted at teenagers. Singers
with some content beyond obvious beats and verses about the dance floor are in
danger. The
situation is critical. Good
pop musicians still exist, but just few. Definetely, this is not a good moment
for losing artists like Donna Summer. But, death is something that we can not
usually negotiate with. A cruel doubt remains: Who is next?
